Style Shift - Making a Comeback

As modern fashion evolves, we see a pattern in bringing back trends from previous eras. Over the past couple of years, some of the trends that have made a marvelous comeback include; lingerie style dresses and tops, claw clips, mom jeans, chunky sneakers, scrunchies, bike shorts, flared pants, maxi faux-leather coats, cut-off jean shorts, leopard print, baby tanks and tees, and more. Many of these trends were popular in the early 2000s. and they are loved again today We tried to forget about some trends from the past and did not expect they would make a comeback. However, those trends are coming back in recent runway shows, prediction style articles, and shopping habits. So let's take a look at what these trends are and where they are popping up in today's world of fashion:

Small shoulder bags to large bags.

We have been loving small shoulder bags for a while now. No matter the print, material, or color, these bags have been a staple piece to many outfits every season. The downside to these bags that previous eras understood is the inconvenience of their size and the difficulty of carrying them with puffy coats in the winter. Despite their size contractions, we've continued to wrestle with these tiny bags to stay on our shoulders because, let's face it - they're cute.

We see models carrying large tote bags in recent runway shows like Tori Burch summer/spring 2022 and Rabens Saloner spring/summer 2022, so expect to see the transformation happen again soon.

True Religion, Ed Hardy, and Juicy Couture.

Another fabulous and outrageous shift we are seeing is the return of these iconic brands, made popular in the early 2000s. Do you remember those jeans with the thick bright stitching designs on the rear? True Religion has been noted to achieve $235 million in revenue in 2021, making the company the most profitable it has been in almost a decade.

We have also seen a massive increase in the tracksuit and Juicy Couture weaers in recent months. The multi-billion-dollar affordable clothing company, Forever 21, has collaborated this winter with Juicy Couture once again (launched September 2021).

Stores have been filled with “Forever X Juicy'' clothing items that have been a huge hit in sales. Many of the clothing items include tracksuits, embellished pieces, terry cloth, made all popular when Juicy was the “it” brand in the early 2000s.

Lastly, we have Ed Hardy, the iconic alternative lifestyle brand that incorporates the classic American Tattoo style into their clothing. This widely-known brand also flourished in the early 2000s but is now being seen once again. Although the designs are not yet being raved over by celebrities, they are still reappearing in the fashion scene. Today we see the brand in a more “vintage” respect. Finding an Ed Hardy piece at the thrift shop is considered a big win for people interested in the hobby. With the designs slowly showing up in paparazzi photos, it is safe to say we will be seeing it a lot more. Singer, Actress, Internet Personality star, Addison Rae wearing Ed Hardy 2021:

Low to high, high to low.

We have seen a major shift in denim all together. We are moving away from high-rise skinny jeans we have seen in recent years and back to the love/hate relationship with low-rise denim. Many have been loving the convenience and comfort high rise jeans have; therefore, many of us, like myself, will probably keep it that way. The low rises are being incorporated into modern fashion in recent runway shows, worn by celebrities, and sold on fast-fashion trendy clothing sites. And despite it freaking many people out, low-rise denim is cool once again.o

Plain black tights to bold patterned tights.

Tights serve so many purposes for fashion that have never quite drifted away. Something we are seeing differently is the switch from plain, opaque tights to bold style tights. For example, in recent runway shows for Gucci and Balenciaga, the sheer patterned tights are making a come back. Some pattern examples include logos that run up the tights, shapes, stripes, and more. As we approach the warmer months, we might have to wait to explore this new tight trend in the Fall of 2022.

Opera gloves.

Excluding weddings and highly formal events, when I think of opera gloves, I am transported back in time to the early 2000s and before, when the bicep length gloves were in style for high school dances. These gloves have been erased from trends for a long time, but they're coming back better than ever! Many celebrities are wearing the gloves to formal events today but are altering the style in a way that is more suitable for current trends. For example, celebrities like Madison Beer, Ariana Grande, Sydney Sweeney, Bella Hadid, Miley Cyrus, and more have been seen rocking the gloves on red carpet events and in shoots. After doing some digging on fast-fashion clothing sites, it is apparent that the gloves are being worn with short cocktail dresses and clubbing outfits too, which is opening a new door for younger generations that never had that accessory in their non-red carpet runway lives.

Feathers.

We have seen feathers for many years, so you might be wondering what is so different about this trend comeback, but we now seeing feathers used in casual wear and not just on formal attire. Feathers have been seen in many outfits in 2021, such as attached to the wrists of blazers, on full dresses, feathery tube tops, and are likely to be seen everywhere this year. Feathers are eye catching, unique, breezy, and bright, adding the perfect accent to a piece that just needs a little spice.
